Meet the Editors

Presenters:
  • Professor Bruce Dobkin, University of California, Los Angeles
  • Nathan Zasler, Professor, affiliate, VCU Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Richmond, Virginia
  • A/Prof Jacinta Douglas, La Trobe University, Victoria, Australia
  • Professor Robyn Tate, The University of Sydney

Overview:

In this session, the Editors of three significant journals in NeuroRehabilitation will be present.  This will be an interactive session, with the main theme of exploring how to be successful in getting a scientific paper published.  The Editors will outline issues leading to acceptances or rejection of submitted articles.  The session will be relevant to researchers of all disciplines who want to publish in the area of NeuroRehabilitation.

Meet the Professors - Part A

Presenters

Prof Volker Hoemberg
Heinrich Heine University, Dusseldorf, Germany

Overview:
This Breakfast Session will address practical issues relevant for physicians in NeuroRehabilitation to answer the question, “Which pharmacological agents should be used or avoided?”

In detail questions can be asked concerning the following topics:

  • Neuroprotection
  • Depression
  • Drugs in diminished states of consciousness
  • Detrimental drugs
  • Anticonvulsants
  • Drugs facilitating brain recovery

From clinical observation to gait analysis, how can movement analysis optimize your strategy in spasticity management?

Sponsored by IPSEN (Gold Sponsors)

Presenter:

Professor Jorge Jacinto
Centro de Medicina de Reabilitação de Alcoitão – Alcabideche, Portugal

Overview:

Spasticity is a frequent manifestation of the Upper Motor Neuron Syndrome and may result in gait deficit.

Clinical and instrumental gait analysis are key to identifying muscles that are responsible for the observed gait deficit. They hence allow clinicians and patients to obtain better achievement rates for the common treatment goals related to gait performance and safety. On the other hand, outcome measurement and monitoring are enhanced.

Attendees will revisit the clinical evaluation tools and the instrumental methods. Treatment strategies and outcomes will be illustrated with several case reports.

Pharmacologic Rehabilitation of Neurobehavioural Disturbances following Traumatic Brain Injury

Presenter:

Alan Weintraub M.D
Medical Director Brain Injury Program
Rocky Mountain Regional Brain Injury System
Craig Hospital,
Englewood,Colorado

Overview:

This presentation recognizes the complex heterogeneity of TBI and will address the pathoanatomic and neurotransmitter correlates underlying such behavioral and cognitive dysfunction. A conceptual model for “neurochemical rebalancing” associated with specific neurologic recovery patterns and targeted symptoms utilizing different classes of medications will be presented. This approach to “rational” pharmacologic treatment is aimed at facilitating effective rehabilitation during different stages of recovery and optimizing long-term outcomes. Ultimately, these approaches contribute to a more evidence based model of clinical practice.
