Max capacity: 30 delegates

This workshop is a joint venture between RMSANZ and ISPO Australia

Overview:

Stay up to date with the latest componentry, guided by acknowledged experts in the field. Select appropriate socket design, feet/ankle components for your patients in a multidisciplinary format of 4 case studies over 3 hours covering scenarios from a young traumatic amputee to an elderly trans-tibial K1-2 level amputee.

The 4 cases, discussed interactively, will allow us to explore the different ends of the market. From traditional socket designs all the way to hydraulic and microprocessor controlled prosthetic ankles and foot. We will use an app format to encourage audience participation for questions raised in the scenarios.

Optimal decision making in prescription demands a multidisciplinary approach:
1. Physician input informing relevant medical issues.
2. Prosthetist expertise in available/optimal componentry and manufacture.
3. Physiotherapist expertise in physical impairments and gait training.

Presenters:
Prosthetist: Mr David Howells OAM is one of Australia’s leading and longest serving prosthetists, and is the Founder of and Senior Prosthetist at APC Prosthetics.

Physiotherapist: Ms Cathy Howells OAM is a Consultant Amputee Physiotherapist with APC Prosthetics and Ossur Australia. She is a registered physiotherapist who has worked exclusively with amputees for over 34 years.

Rehabilitation Medicine Physician: Dr Greg Bowring is Director of Rehabilitation Medicine at The Prince of Wales Hospital (2007-ongoing) formerly Director of Rehabilitation Medicine at St George Hospital (1989-2007) and Conjoint Senior Lecturer in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of NSW.

Prosthetist: Sarah McConnell is a clinical prosthetist who has studied and worked in the field of prosthetics and orthotics for over 10 years. She has worked at APC prosthetics for the past 5 years with a special interest in high end prosthetic fittings including microprocessor, recreational and sporting prostheses.

Key learning objectives:

  • Ensuring optimal prosthetic prescription for the trans-tibial amputee based on patient’s goals and funding model.
  • Understanding principles of gait training for trans-tibial amputee depending on patient’s level of function.
  • Better understanding on available evidence related to the socket design, interface, and suspension of the componentry for range of patients
  • Exploring sports prescription and training in the young trans-tibial amputee.
