Workshop Outline

“The typical doctor knows more about buying a used car than they do about reading a research paper with insight”. You know about EBM but you would  like to know some of the tools?

This workshop follows on from last year’s successful opening Plenary session by Dr DJ Kennedy from Stanford University when he demonstrated how appropriate application of EBM principles can strengthen and weaken the conclusions of a research paper.

This workshop will comprise 2 didactic sessions to produce a routine checklist that can be used to protect you from being full by the literature. The first session will describe the hallmarks of an honest, fully transparent application on pain treatment. It hallmarks will be explained and justified on the grounds of common sense, logic, courtesy, and scepticism.

The second session will address statistics. It will cover the statistics that are clinically meaningful and useful, and which should be reported in any clinical scientific paper. It will cover those statistics that is used in order to cover up deficiencies in studies yet let them make exaggerated claims of success. These statistics are easy to grasp and use daily, and you will wonder how you haven’t used them before!

Participants will then apply the checklist on exercises in which they analyse, in groups, two publications that claim success in the management of common types of pain.

Please bring a calculator with “square root” function.
