The neuronal-glial link explained; DTM SCS 12 month RCT results and functional outcomes

Dr Krishnan Chakravarthy, MD, PhD is an anesthesiologist based in San Diego, who specialises in multi-modal pain management. As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, and Affiliate Professor in the Department of Nanoengineering, Dr Chakravarthy instructs medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine, in addition to running his own laboratory. His research interests include incorporating new technology into advancing pain care. |
Dr Leo Kapural presenting both NSRBP 6-Month Data & RESCUE Study
Join us for lunch while we listen to Dr. Leonardo Kapural outlining the 6-month results of SCS at 10kHz for Non-Surgical Refractory Back Pain (NSRBP) RCT, where patients not considered candidates for spinal surgery were randomised 1:1 comparing conventional medical management (CMM) alone to CMM and 10kHz stimulation. Dr. Kapural will also present data on the RESCUE study, a retrospective assessment of switching patients to 10kHz stimulation without a temporary trial in a cohort who had failed traditional SCS therapy.
Dr Leonardo Kapural is a pain physician at the Carolinas Pain Institute and The Center for Clinical Research. He is also a clinical adjunct faculty of anesthesiology at Wake Forest University, School of Medicine. Dr. Kapural’s interests include peripheral nerve stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, discogenic low back pain, and visceral abdominal pain. |

Prof Tillman Boesel Associate Professor (Macquarie University’s Australian School of Advanced Medicine) Associate Professor Boesel has held an academic appointment at Macquarie University’s Australian School of Advanced Medicine since 2007. In addition to his academic position, he currently practices at Macquarie University Hospital, Macquarie Neurosurgery, Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and Nepean Private Hospital; with private consulting in Penrith, North Ryde and Newtown. His special interests include neuropathic pain, interventional pain management and medical education. |
Vertebral Endplate Pain; Background, current science, and a simplified technique for treatment via basivertebral nerve ablation
Untreated nociceptive pain is accepted as a potential underlying cause for recurrent pain and disability in patients who previously enjoyed excellent results from neuromodulation.
Modic changes (I, II) of the vertebral endplate seen on MRI scan are associated with low back pain and the basivertebral nerve (BVN) is known to be the primary innervation of the vertebral endplate.
Level 1 medical evidence published over the past five years supports RF ablation of the BVN in patients with painful Modic changes.
Background, anatomy, and technique using bi-pedicular access for intravertebral RF ablation of the basivertebral nerve will be presented.
Dr Robert E Wright (DABPM, FIPP) is recognized as a pioneer and innovator in the field of interventional pain management. He invented and developed the DekompressorTM percutaneous discectomy probe in 2001 as a better tool to treat symptomatic disc herniation. More recently in 2009 he invented the Nimbus Concepts Multi-tined Expandable Electrode - a safer, more efficient, and more effective device for radiofrequency procedures. Dr Wright moved to Australia in 2019 and is now looking forward to being involved in patient care, research, and teaching with Dr. Vahid Mohabbati and the team at Sydney Pain Management Centre. |
