Dr Lisa Matriste is a general dentist and a health and environmental activist. She founded the Not-for-profit organisation, Say No to Mercury which is accredited with the United Nations. Say No to Mercury represents civil society’s interest against mercury pollution at the new global treaty known as the Minamata Convention on Mercury. She is a leading international advocate spotlighting the need for the introduction of necessary dental reforms to address the outdated toxic practice of the use of mercury based “silver dental fillings” - ensuring protection of dental workers and their families, the general public and the environment we all share from unsafe mercury exposure. Dr Lisa Matriste’s dental career started 37 years ago as a dental student where she graduated with Honours from the University of Queensland Dental School in 1986. She has been practicing Mercury Free Dentistry for 30 years and Metal Free Dentistry for 12 years. Fifteen years ago she became an early adopter of light based technologies such as multiple wavelength lasers and LEDs (both high and low intensities), and Photodynamic therapy which are utilised everyday within her clinical dental practice.
She is a member of many Australian and International organisations which support her quest for knowledge and skill development in the following areas: toxicology, nutrition and environmental medicine, craniofacial pain, dentofacial orthopaedics, orthodontics, sleep medicine, regenerative medicine/dentistry using blood derived autologous stem cells.
As owner of the Melbourne based clinics “Laser + Holistic Dental” and the recently formed “Laser+ Holistic Aesthetics”, she has introduced many cutting edge technologies that stimulate the body’s innate natural healing processes and integrates these into clinical practice. She describes her business as being ‘holistic’ - embracing sustainable initiatives plus incorporating ethical, environmental and social responsibility policies. The services offered at Dr Lisa Matriste’s clinics support her health philosophy. This was subsequently developed following the premature deaths of her parents – her mother dying of cancer and her father suffering a sudden fatal heart attack. The lessons learned from these experiences motivated her to help others by conceptualising the pillars of her treatment philosophy. This can be simply summarised as the following:
*eliminate toxic exposure both on a personal and environmental level,
*provide optimal cellular nutrition and oxygenation of the cells
*obtain sound, restorative sleep.
Dr Matriste is continually developing clinical protocols where she as a dentist can offer health solutions that make significant positive improvements for her patients’ general health and well-being beyond the conventional “drill, fill and bill” approach. Dentistry has been the foundation by which she helps people to directly transform their lives. Within her dental profession, Dr Lisa Matriste’s mission is to assist dentists to transition quickly from the mercury age of dentistry to the light age where Lasers become mainstream “tools of the trade.” As a health and environmental activist, Dr Lisa Matriste strives to influence Australian and International governments to develop sound health and environmental policies, which will benefit all -now and for generations to come.
