The course content follows the recommendations of ASNZS4173:2004.

Perioperative Nurses, Health professionals in skin cancer clinics, Beauticians,
 Plastic surgery health professionals, Laser Technicians, Ophthalmologists, 
Skin Specialist and Dermatologists.

This course is suitable for anyone wishing to be licensed to use laser apparatus for surgical and cosmetic procedures or those who wish to obtain a radiation safety officer certificate for laser practices.

Laser Safety Training (Half Day)

The lecturer will present a comprehensive program
 that covers ALL surgical and cosmetic lasers and includes:

• Physics and the operation of lasers
• Interaction of laser radiation with tissue
• Hazards of surgical lasers
• Laser safety
• The role of the laser operator/nurse

Laser Officer Training (Full Day)

This full day lecturer will present a comprehensive program that covers ALL surgical and cosmetic lasers and includes:

• Physics and the operation of lasers
• Interaction of laser radiation with tissue
• Hazards of surgical lasers
• Laser safety
• The role of the laser operator/nurse

Extra training for Laser Safety Officers includes:

• Role and responsibilities of the LSO
• Administrative controls, audits and checking credentials
• Laser clarification and hazard area assessment
• Australian Standards requirements
• Relevant ACORN standards
• Accident response

Qualification Awarded Upon Successfully Completing The Course

Certificates of completion will be emailed to graduates post course, enabling you to apply for a Laser Licence.

Presenter

Associate Professor Lee Collins (AM BSc(Hons) MSc FACPSEM MARPS) is a medical physicist, and until he retired in 2014, Director of the Medical Physics Department at Westmead Hospital, Sydney, where he now has an honorary position. His interests are in ionising radiation safety, laser safety, diagnostic radiology physics, and nuclear medicine.

Since leaving university in 1968, he has worked in hospitals in Australia and the UK, and during a research appointment in Germany, became interested in laser applications in medicine. He is Chairman of the Standards Australia medical laser committee (which is responsible for AS/NZS 4173 and AS IEC 60601.2.22), and represents Australia at the International Electrotechnical Commission committee TC76 which develops the international laser safety standards from which national standards are derived.

He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2003, and has, or had had, honorary academic roles at the Universities of Sydney, and Western Sydney.
