Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is the term used to describe a range of non-Alzheimer dementias producing focal lobar atrophy involving the frontal lobe and/or the temporal lobes. Frontotemporal dementia is the second commonest form of primary dementia in the presenium and has an enormous impact on carers as it produces marked changes in personality, behaviour and communication abilities. There are currently no drug therapies approved for use in FTD so patients are typically prescribed medications developed for other conditions, as well as antipsychotics, anti-anxiety medications and antidepressants for managing behavioural symptoms.

A pilot study conducted by Pardini et al., in patients with frontal variant FTD, showed improvements in neuropsychiatric features, theory of mind and global clinical impression following 12 weeks of supplementation with Souvenaid. These exploratory data, and the suitability of the product, will be discussed in the context of the current management of patients with FTD whose treatment needs remain largely unmet.
