Adelaide Botanic Garden

The Adelaide Botanic Garden is an oasis in the cosmopolitan heart of the city. This 16-hectare historical garden features stunning collections of plants including Australian natives, exotics and ornamental plants. To make the most of your time, stop by the Visitor Information Centre and find out what is happening at the garden and which plant collections are looking their best.

Things to see include the magnificently restored Victorian Palm House, the SA Water Mediterranean Garden, the Amazon Waterlily Pavilion, the Santos Museum of Economic Botany, Bicentennial Conservatory and the Australian Native Garden. The garden also has permanent and temporary public installations by South Australian artists and designers.

Admission charges apply for the Bicentennial Conservatory, otherwise entry is free. You can also join a free guided walking tour provided by the Friends of the Botanic Garden. Tours leave from the Schomburgk Pavilion at 10.30am daily (except Christmas and Good Friday).

Facilities include the Diggers Garden Shop; offering a wide range of seeds, gardening books and garden wares. You can also have a casual meal in one of the cafés, Simpson Kiosk and Café Fibonacci, or go all-out with a fine dining experience at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens Restaurant.

 

Adelaide Zoo

Adelaide Zoo is just a 15 minute walk from the central business district and is home to more than 1,800 animals and almost 300 species of exotic and native mammals, birds, reptiles and fish exhibited in over eight hectares of magnificent botanic surroundings.

Adelaide Zoo is also home to Wang Wang and Funi, the only Giant Pandas in the Southern Hemisphere. The zoo's other major exhibits include the Immersion South East Asian Rainforest, Seal Bay, Australian Rainforest Wetlands walk-through aviary, Nocturnal House, Reptile House, Bug Barn, Children's Zoo and the Westpac Envirodome, and environmental education centre.

Zookeepers provide daily animal feeds and keeper talks. You can join an Adelaide Zoo free walkabout tour throughout the day - tours depart from various locations every half hour between 9.45am and 3.30pm.

Adelaide Zoo is open from 9.30am - 5.00pm every day of the year, including Christmas.

Tandanya is a visionary and vibrant place to explore and experience contemporary and traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture through the performing and visual arts. You can wonder at the diversity, resilience, wisdom and creativity of the world's oldest culture, expressed through a range of art styles, genres and techniques.

Guest can experience a cultural presentation at 12pm for people or tour groups that have booked at least one day in advance. It is highly recommended that everyone who wishes to see a presentation call and make a booking.

You can also see films, book a group tour, browse through Tandanya's superb shop or hire their gallery spaces and theatre.
Tandanya is the Kaurna (pronounced Garn-na) Aboriginal name for the Adelaide city area and was for many thousands of years, a place for special ceremonies connected with Red Kangaroo Dreaming.

The National Wine Centre provides visitors with the opportunity to enjoy wine and winemaking from the ground up. The interactive Wine Discovery Journey and Exhibition is ideal for wine novices and connoisseurs alike!

After having finely tuning your senses in the newly renovated Wine Discovery Journey, you will then be ready to taste the extensive selection of Australia wines in the Centre's WINED Bar, which is open daily for wine tastings, wine sales and an all-day Tapas menu.

Relax and enjoy fresh espresso coffee and a selection of Australian cheeses or select from the seasonal Tapas menu. There are over 120 wines for tasting including iconic South Australian wines such as Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace. The National Wine Centre, through the Education and Training Centre also offers a range of wine appreciation and classes about wine. The South Australian Museum is renowned for its world-class natural history and cultural collections.

The Museum is home to the world's largest collection of Australian Aboriginal cultural material, with over 3,000 artefacts on display, and the culturally significant Yuendumu Doors. The South Australian Biodiversity Gallery brings into sharp focus the land and marine wildlife of South Australia, with touch screens, interactive elements and a wealth of information.

Other galleries include the Pacific Cultures, Megafauna, Opalised Fossils, Mawson, Ediacaran, Minerals and the Ancient Egyptian Room. The ever-popular information centre on level one contains a wealth of information and direct access to the collections, with staff available for identification of objects and assistance with research. A vibrant program of temporary exhibitions includes the prestigious annual Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, the stunning ANZANG (Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and New Guinea) Nature Photography, and annual summer blockbuster events that are always a big hit.
