Prof Macintyre was Director of the Acute Pain Service (APS) at the Royal Adelaide Hospital from the beginning of 1989, when it was first established (the first in Australia), until she retired from clinical practice in mid-2020. She has an access appointment as a Consultant in the Central Adelaide Local Health Network, is a Clinical Professor at the University of Adelaide, and continues to teach, contribute journal articles, and be involved in some FPM activities. She was a member of the first Board of the FPM and awarded the Robert Orton Medal in 2005 for her work in pain medicine.

She led the 2nd and 3rd revisions of Acute Pain Management Scientific Evidence and, more recently, the 2023 revision of the ANZCA/FPM Position Statement on Acute Pain Management (PS41), which includes a new Analgesic Stewardship appendix, and the development of the FPM Opioid-induced ventilatory impairment emergency response workshop. She also contributed to the National Prescribing Service ‘Safe use of opioids in acute pain’ resources in 2022 as well as Therapeutic Guidelines: Pain and Analgesia 2020. The 6th edition of her book Acute Pain Management: a Practical Guide will be published in April 2026.

Professor Suzanne Nielsen is an NHMRC Leadership Fellow and Deputy Director of the Monash Addiction Research Centre in Melbourne. With over 250 peer-reviewed publications and more than 80 invited presentations globally, her research has advanced the understanding of prescription, over-the-counter, and illicit drug-related harm. Prof. Nielsen has played a key role in shaping policy and legislative changes in Australia, including the rescheduling of codeine and alprazolam, expanding naloxone overdose prevention in primary care, and contributing to clinical guidelines for opioid agonist treatment in opioid dependence.

Dr Jonathan Penm has extensive experience in conducting health service research to reduce opioid-related harms. Dr Penm is an Associate Professor and Pharmacist at the School of Pharmacy, University of Sydney. Dr Penm currently holds an NHRMC Investigator grant (emerging leadership EL2) and is an international leader in hospital pharmacy research (top 0.072%, Expertscape). He served as Past Chair of the Research Leadership Group for Advanced Pharmacy Australia (> 5,000 members, peak Australian hospital pharmacy association) and Past Chair of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Hospital Pharmacy Section (>4 million pharmacists in >100 countries). Dr Penm is a pharmacist with expertise in opioid safety and health service interventions to reduce medication-related harms. Dr Penm’s research has reduced harms through cohort studies, case-control studies and randomised controlled trials. Dr Penm is currently CIA on 2 MRFF grants (MRFMMIP000023, MRF2022763) and has extensive experience in improving prescribing and medication use (with additional focus on opioids). Dr Penm has strong grounding in research methodology, published over 160 high-quality international papers, and translated their research into practice in the healthcare setting and through development of best-practice guidelines.
