Stories, Skits, Illusions and Innovations: Pain science education in the clinic
Hosted by Reality Health and Noigroup Publications, Lorimer and Dan present an entertaining and scientifically-based hour on shifting our client’s understanding of how pain works and what they can do to promote their own recovery. Lorimer will tell stories, run role plays and present research identifying key barriers to modern pain education. Dan will focus on how we can learn more about pain by experiencing and understanding visual illusions. He will discuss how the brain generates meaning from complex sensory events and his recent book that aims to bring the mystery and wonder of perception and pain to a clinic near you.

Professor Lorimer Moseley AO University of South Australia, SA
Professor Lorimer Moseley is a clinical scientist investigating pain in humans. He has published over 360 papers, six books and numerous book chapters. He has given over 150 keynote or invited presentations at interdisciplinary meetings in 30 countries. He has provided professional education in pain sciences to over 25,000 medical and health practitioners and public lectures to as many again. His research group’s videos and articles have has well over 20 million views.
Dr Daniel Harvie is an NHMRC Early Career Research Fellow and experienced pain physiotherapist. He leads an interdisciplinary research team investigating the potential role of visual and other illusions in teaching people about pain and the role of virtual reality in pain research and management. He has published 45 papers and several book chapters. His recent book Pain & Perception looks at pain as a perceptual inference that obeys the broader principles of perception and presents clear implications for how we understand pain and its management.

Dr Chris Orlikowski is a specialist pain medicine physician. He is a fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. In the past, he was Director of the Acute Pain Service at the Royal Hobart Hospital for 5 years. He now owns and runs the Federal Street Pain Clinic where he offers a wide range of procedures including spinal cord stimulators.
Dr Nitin Yogesh is a Neurosurgeon and an Australian trained pain specialist. He currently works as a Staff Specialist and Deputy Director of the pain unit at the Royal Hobart Hospital. Dr Yogesh has trained and worked at various centres of excellence around the world including Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. He uses a multidisciplinary approach to pain management and specialises in intervention techniques such as neuromodulation and nerve blocks for pain disorders.
Ms Annie Williams (MScMed (Pain Mgt), Clinical Nurse Consultant) is the President of GATE Group, GATE – Pain Management Interest Group VIC. Annie’s interests include nurse education, opioid stewardship and policy development.
