Dr Matthew Bryant (FANZCA, FFPMANZCA, FRACGP, FACRRM, Grad Dip Rural GP, MBBS) is Director of the North Queensland Persistent Pain Management Service. His team of 35 people (25 full time equivalent staff) provide multidisciplinary care to a population of 800 000 people, across five Hospital and Health Services, and an area of 770 000 km2. Prior to obtaining his Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia Fellowships, Matt worked as a rural GP in a number of locations across North Queensland and the Northern Territory. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at James Cook University, and a member of the Townsville Hospital Foundation Board and the ANZCA Faculty of Pain Medicine Queensland Regional Committee.

After originally working as an Occupational Therapist in Brisbane and London, I later completed a B.Medicine / B.Surgery through Flinders University, Adelaide in 2011. I was awarded the WA Crammond Prize in Psychiatry in 2011.

I have completed psychiatry training in tertiary teaching hospitals across Sydney and the Gold Coast, specialising in the area of Addiction Psychiatry. I have conducted a number of research projects within this field, particularly with respect to opioid dependence. I have an interest in "triple diagnosis" - that is, comorbid chronic pain, addiction and mental illness.

After Anaesthesia Fellowship, Dr. Cooke completed her pain medicine training at the Multidisciplinary Pain Management Unit, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital under the mentorship of Professor Tess Cramond. Further studies in paediatric anaesthesia and pain medicine were completed at the Seattle Children’s Hospital, Seattle, USA before returning to Brisbane.

Dr. Cooke practices as a Pain Medicine Specialist at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Brisbane and has a special interest in paediatric, adolescent and young adult pain medicine. She is a Director and Co-founder of SKIP, Support kids in Pain, a not for profit organisation providing community based multidisciplinary pain management programs to support children suffering chronic pain and their families, for over 6 years.

Jeremy Hayllar trained in general medicine and gastroenterology in London. Looking for a change, he spent 10 years at Mt Isa Hospital as Director of Medical Services and general physician. In this hard drinking mining community he became interested in substance use disorders. After moving to Brisbane, he did a 9 month full time course in photography.  In 2004 he became Clinical Director of the Alcohol and Drug Service, MNMH. His interests include management of nicotine, and opioid dependence, and co-morbidity.

Champika (Champs) has over 20 years’ experience as a pharmacist. She has worked as a clinical pharmacist in hospitals in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Champika has held the role of Quality Use of Medicines Pharmacist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital since 2008. Champika is an experienced researcher and quality improvement specialist who is passionate about implementing sustainable practice change to improve the use of medicines. In her current role, Champika has been involved in implementing the hospital’s antimicrobial stewardship program, the IV to Oral initiative, and various projects to improve management of anticoagulation.

A key current research interest is optimising opioid prescribing in acute settings.

Champika is currently undertaking several related projects across Metro North Hospital and Health Service and state-wide.

Dr Ring is a Pain Medicine Specialist and Specialist Anaesthetist. He graduated from the University of Queensland before undertaking training in Anaesthesia in south-eastern Queensland and in Pain Medicine at the Michael Cousins Pain Management and Research Centre, Royal North Shore Hospital, a leading centre in Australia for research and multidisciplinary management of persistent pain.

Dr Ring then worked for a number of years in Sydney at Nepean Hospital, Liverpool Hospital, Norwest Private Hospital, North Shore Private Hospital and the Northern Private Pain Centre.

Recently, Dr Ring moved back to northern New South Wales and currently works as a Pain Medicine Specialist and Specialist Anaesthetist at Lismore Base Hospital, St Vincent’s Private Hospital and John Flynn Private Hospital.

Benita graduated from a Bachelor of Pharmacy in 2012, and has since also completed a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy while working predominantly at Redcliffe Hospital, north of Brisbane. There she has worked in a variety of clinical areas including general medical, emergency department, Hospital in the Home and pre-admission clinic before becoming involved in the implementation and running of the Opioid Stewardship Service. She now works closely every day with the Acute Pain Service to review inpatients, undertakes auditing and provides education and resources to pharmacists, nursing staff and prescribers. Benita is now pursuing a Graduate Diploma in Pain Management to improve the impact she has in her role.
