The theme and focus for this year's meeting is Acute Pain - Also a National Challenge.

The workshop will emphasize the importance of effective acute pain management and the complexities and challenges involved in its delivery.

Topics include:

  • Safe use of opioids 
  • The difference between sedation, sleep and respiratory depression 
  • Morbidity and morality related to acute pain management
  • Preventing the transition from acute to sub-acute and persistent pain 

The popular and entertaining panel discussion will feature again in 2013, focussing on the everyday challenges faced by clinicians managing acute pain.

The Fundamentals of Pain Workshop aims to equip participants with an overview of pain, pain mechanisms, pain treatments and the psychology of pain.

The stimulating workshop will cover pain pathways, neurotransmitters, sensitivity, psychological factors and therapeutic agents including neuropathic agents and opioids, and weave it all together with case studies.

We invite you to participate in this introductory half day workshop, suitable for clinicians from all disciplines with an interest in pain in childhood.

Delegates will obtain an overview of persisting pain in childhood, an introduction to key challenges, and solutions for improving care in childhood.

Sessions will cover:

  • Prevalence, predictors and impact of chronic pain in childhood
  • Common or complex conditions including functional pain disorders, pain in the context of medical disorders and palliative care and conversion disorder presenting with pain 
  • Pharmacological analgesia considerations peculiar to paediatrics 
  • The roles of multidisciplinary team members 
  • Programs for adolescents 
  • Models of care for those in remote regions 

Case-focused panel discussions will conclude each sessions.

This half-day workshop is designed for all physiotherapist who work with people in pain, and the workshop will address professional issues facing physiotherapists who work in pain-related fields.
