About Alice Springs
Alice Springs is the heart of Australia, the capital of the Outback, it's the red sand of the desert, it's where the traditional owners of the land, the Arrernte peoples have lived for thousands of years and where pioneer men and women gave 'tough' a new meaning. It's where they race camels, hold regattas in dry river beds and watch the sunset over the MacDonnell Ranges - it's the Northern Territory in all its splendour.
The history and heritage of Alice Springs overflows with a rich cast of characters - in the late 1800s and early 1900s, only the most intrepid pioneers braved its rugged environment. From Afghan cameleers to flying doctors, today it is possible to pay homage to their legacy at various historic sites around the town.
Despite its beginning as a remote outpost, present day Alice is well appointed and culturally rich thanks to the influence of visitors from all over the world. Situated on the banks of the Todd River (which only occasionally runs with water) it has excellent restaurants, an energetic nightlife and hosts a calendar of quirky and exciting events all year round.
The Aboriginal presence is strong and engaging (where else can you hear six uniquely Australian languages in the main street?), with cultural and spiritual connections echoing in every rock and landmark. They preserve the timeless art, songs and rituals that connect humankind with Australia’s legendary creation and pre-history – The Dreamtime.
Framing the town, the MacDonnell Ranges are home to dramatic gorges, chasms and waterholes, which have long been attracting adventurers, painters and photographers from around the world. For the ultimate bush walk, join the Larapinta Trail in the West MacDonnell Ranges, a 250 kilometre trek that's been described as one of the top 10 walks in the world. The 11th Conference of The Australian College of Nurse Practitioners (incorporating NursePrac ED) will be held at the Alice Springs Convention Centre, Alice Springs.
