This is an interactive learning module designed to provide Nurse Practitioners with a comprehensive update on chronic pain with a strong focus on applying best practice in the management of moderate to severe chronic non-cancer pain in primary care.

Learning Outcomes

To recognise the complexity of chronic pain and the benefits of a multidimensional approach to assessment and management
To improve the ability to address psychosocial risk factors for developing long-term disability amongst chronic pain patients
To review pharmacotherapies used in chronic pain management in order to support the quality use of these medications
To apply best practice principles when prescribing opioid analgesics in moderate to severe chronic pain
To review the key steps in assessing patients presenting with back and hip pain

Speakers

Dr Malcolm Hogg
Staff Specialist, Anaesthesia and Pain Management and Head of Pain Services Melbourne Health (Royal Melbourne Hospital)
Dr Hogg supervises a coordinated range of services at Melbourne Health, linking the acute and interventional pain services at the City Campus with the persistent pain services at the Royal Park Campus. Therapies offered include interventional procedures for cancer and non-cancer pain, and allied healthbased pain management programs. Dr Hogg is the current President of the Australian Pain Society, and is co-ordinating the Waiting in Pain project, a systematic investigation into the provision of persistent pain services in Australia.

Dr Stephen de Graaff
Director of Pain Services and Senior Rehabilitation Physician Epworth Healthcare
Dr de Graaff is Director of Pain Services and Senior Rehabilitation Physician at Epworth Healthcare. He is a Fellow of the RACP Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFRM). His areas of research interest include pain management, stroke rehabilitation, spasticity management, post-polio sequelae and continuing professional development. He is currently the President of the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (RACP).

Fiona Batchelor

Health Psychologist, Private Practice
Fiona Batchelor has 24 years of experience in health psychology and has extensive experience in clinical work, research and teaching in both the UK and Australia. Fiona has worked in the area of chronic pain for many years at the Melbourne Pain Management Clinic. She also has a background in general and psychiatric nursing. She currently works clinically in private practice and is particularly interested in patient education and preventative medicine.

Amal Helou
Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Consultant, Pain Management Centre, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital

Amal has over 30 years experience in pain management, she is employed as a nurse practitioner in Pain Management at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She has particular interest in patient and family education. She has actively worked and advocated for pain management in the older person in hospital and community settings. Amal is also interested in exploring patient narrative as a therapeutic intervention and the impact persistent pain has on the whole individual.
