Jack Haughton, Manager Rehabilitation and Therapy at The Granada Centre will present on our approach to Transitional Rehabilitation Care and how we support people to set and achieve goals that are meaningful to them. The presentation will also feature a case study profile of a spinal injury client and how our services supported them towards their goals of independence and community living.
Jack Haughton is a physiotherapist specialising in treating neurological conditions. He trained in the UK and graduated in 2004 after a previous career in the construction industry. After a variety of experience at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in Yorkshire he moved to New Zealand in 2008 with his partner. At Christchurch Public Hospital Jack worked in acute stroke, neurology, neurosurgery and general medicine before taking a job at St John of God Hauora Trust in 2013 as a physiotherapist and has been in his current role as Manager of Rehabilitation and Therapy for nearly six years. In addition to a physiotherapy degree Jack also have a Postgraduate Certificate in Rehabilitation and a BSc in Sports Science. |
This sesssion will outline the options that a multidisciplinary team may consider when helping treat a spinal cord injury patient with a botulinum toxin A, such as Dysport® (c.botulinum Type A Toxin- haemagglutinin) therapy. The session will showcase an example of a patient, considerations that are important to the patient, their carers and why Dysport could be an appropriate choice for patients living with lower limb spasticity.
Dr. Stephen de Graaff is Director of Pain Services and Senior Rehabilitation Physician at Epworth Healthcare. He is a Fellow of the AFRM (RACP) and a Founding Member of the Rehabilitation Society of Australia and New Zealand (RMSANZ). He is a Past President of the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (Royal Australasian College of Physicians). Dr de Graaff is also a Board Member of the Australian Institute of Neuro-Rehabilitation. He was Convenor of the 2016 Australasia-Pacific Post-Polio Conference in Sydney in September 2016. His areas of research interest include stroke rehabilitation, spasticity management, pain management, post-polio sequelae and Continuing Professional Development. |
There will be a brief background to ACC’s Pressure Injury Prevention Programme, and the factors that led ACC to bring together an Expert Panel to develop a Pressure Injuries in Spinal Cord Injuries Consensus Statement. This session will describe the process so far in developing this Consensus Statement, the content of the Statement, what we hope to achieve with the Statement, and our plans moving forwards. Prudence Lennox has been working in the nursing profession with a community focus for over 20 years across the UK, Ireland, Europe, Australia, and NZ. Prudence has a focus and speciality in the home and community disability support sector having held senior leadership and management roles while also remaining clinically focussed. She is passionate about raising awareness and advocating for equity and improved health outcomes in the disability sector.
Prudence is the chair of ACC’s Pressure Injury in Spinal Cord Injury Expert Advisory Group and will be presenting on the development of a Pressure Injury in Spinal Cord Injury Consensus Statement. |
Nicky Hunter has been working in her chosen field of Spinal Cord Injury management for the past 25 years. She has community based experience in Tasmania and in the Spinal Outreach Team in Queensland. Since returning to WA in 2010 she has been working as a Senior Occupational Therapist at the state-wide Spinal unit treating patients with spinal cord injury within the hospital and as outpatients. Nicky has a particular interest in the area of upper limb therapy for tetraplegics and was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2014 ‘To investigate innovative therapies to promote independence for tetraplegic patients.’ Over the past few years Nicky has been instrumental in setting up a Nerve and Tendon Transfer service in WA, including development of assessment and treatment protocols. |
