Learning Objectives:
To develop an understanding of current theories of the resilience of both humans and human systems, and how these principles may be applied to the care of the rehabilitation patient and to the leadership and functions of the rehabilitation team.
Overview:
Recent thinking has re-defined resilience as the capacity of a person or system to maintain core integrity and purpose in the face of change or challenge. Using this approach, it is possible to consider the resilience of our patients as initially involving the emotional processing of the trauma of loss, and the later acceptance of and adaptation to disability. This is a different journey for each patient, and appropriate attitudes, responses and actions of rehabilitation staff are an integral part of this process.
Individual rehabilitation staff also face the possibility of vicarious trauma, and should consider ways in which their own resilience can be assessed, strengthened and maintained.
The rehabilitation team can also be regarded as a human system with its own patterns of resilience. The factors contributing to ‘high resilience’ teams can be explored and applied to rehabilitation teamwork
